Carter Holt Harvey has a long and proud history of servicing key markets throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Rim.
Then first seeds of the company were sown in 1859 when Robert Holt and Sons was established in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand. Over time they expanded along the East Coast with a chain of timber, hardware and building supply outlets. Then, in 1895 Francis Carter opened the first of a series of sawmills on the central North Island at Koputaroa.
Alex Harvey started a sheet metal business in Auckland in 1886 producing milk churns. The business prospered, growing over time to become Alex Harvey Industries - one of New Zealand's major manufacturing operations.
In 1971 Carter and Holt merged to become Carter Holt Limited with the intention of using the chain of building supply outlets to sell the product produced by the sawmills and timber yards.
These two operations clearly complemented each other - Carter Holt's skills lay in wood based production and retailing, whilst Alex Harvey Industries' great strength was in manufacturing. They were joined in 1985 to become Carter Holt Harvey.
The acquisition of the Caxton Group in 1989 brought with it extensive forest assets and tissue manufacturing operations. In May 2000 Carter Holt Harvey purchased the CSR Panels business, and became the largest wood panel manufacturer in Australasia.
Today Carter Holt Harvey is a world-class forest and paper products company and one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, with operations primarily in New Zealand and Australia. Carter Holt Harvey is the largest producer of tissue products, wood composite panel products, and the leader in the production of timber, plywood, and engineered wood products in Australasia. Carter Holt Harvey is now the second largest company in New Zealand. The company is New Zealand's largest private forest owner, with more than 11,000 employees throughout its vertically integrated businesses. |
